The Pittsburgh of the South – Birmingham, Alabama

Nestled at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains at the cross-section of two major railroads, Birmingham is the largest city in the U.S. state of Alabama and is the county seat of Jefferson County. With a population currently estimated at 242, 820, and a metro population of 1, 079, 089 Birmingham was called the “Magic City” at the height of the nation’s manufacturing age. Birmingham is also known as “The Pittsburgh of the South”, as its major industries centered around iron and steel production. One of the largest banking centers in the U.S., Birmingham ranks as one of the most important business centers in the Southeastern United States.

With its numerous art galleries in the area and home to Birmingham Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the state, Birmingham is the cultural and entertainment capital of Alabama. Birmingham is also home to the state’s major ballet, opera, and symphony orchestra companies such the Alabama Ballet, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Ballet, Birmingham Concert Chorale, Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival and Opera Birmingham.

Visitors to Birmingham will be bowled over by its numerous attractions, events and recreation. Birmingham boasts of several museums including the largest, Birmingham Museum of Art. It is also home to plethora of cultural festivals that feature music, films, and regional heritage.
